Funding Opportunity

Doctoral Scheme

Summary

THIS INFORMATION IS FOR CURRENT AWARD HOLDERS ONLY - APPLICANTS PLEASE SEE THE BLOCK GRANT PARTNERSHIPS OR BLOCK GRANT PARTNERSHIPS: CAPACITY BUILDING.

Doctoral awards provide support for up to three years of full-time study, or up to five years of part-time study (and in exceptional cases full-time up to four years or part-time up to seven years), to enable you to pursue and complete a programme of doctoral research and gain a doctoral degree.

In awarding studentships for doctoral research we assume that a doctoral thesis is a piece of work that:

  • exhibits substantial evidence of original scholarship and contains material that can be prepared for publication, and
  • can be produced by a capable, well-qualified and dilligent student, properly supervised and supported, within the period of award.

We expect full-time award holders to submit their doctoral thesis within four years of the start of the award. Part-time students should submit their thesis within seven years.

How to make an application

We fund the Research Organisation directly, either via the Block Grant Partnerships or Block Grant Partnerships: Capacity Building, therefore, students should talk to the institution at which they plan to study in order to obtain information on their organisational selection processes.

Further Information

Documents for current award holders

The AHRC no longer sends out correspondence to student award holders; all interactions relating to your AHRC funding are through your Research Organisation.

Your Research Organisation will update the AHRC on any changes to your award or individual circumstances through the Student Data Portal.  You should update your own details through Je-S when required.
You can access the rates for the 2010-11 academic year on our current postgraduate awardholders information page. The new Guide for Award Holders will be available on the website in the summer.  It is important that you read the revised Guide carefully as changes are made to AHRC policy each year.

Finishing students: If your award is due to end in the 20010-11 academic year you will be required to complete an End of Award Report before 30 September 2011.

Contacts

The AHRC work with the RCUK Shared Services Centre (SSC) to deliver all of our funding activities. All queries regarding current awards should be directed to the SSC team dealing with your area using the contacts page.
