Funding Opportunity

Doctoral Scheme

Summary

THIS INFORMATION IS FOR CURRENT AWARD HOLDERS ONLY - APPLICANTS PLEASE SEE THE BLOCK GRANT PARTNERSHIPS OR STUDENTSHIP COMPETITION.

Doctoral awards provide support for up to three years of full-time study, or up to five years of part-time study (and in exceptional cases full-time up to four years or part-time up to seven years), to enable you to pursue and complete a programme of doctoral research and gain a doctoral degree.

In awarding studentships for doctoral research we assume that a doctoral thesis is a piece of work that:

  • exhibits substantial evidence of original scholarship and contains material that can be prepared for publication, and
  • can be produced by a capable, well-qualified and dilligent student, properly supervised and supported, within the period of award.

We expect full-time award holders to submit their doctoral thesis within four years of the start of the award. Part-time students should submit their thesis within seven years.

How to make an application

We fund the Research Organisation directly, either via the Studentship Competition, or the Block Grant Partnerships, therefore, students should talk to the institution at which they plan to study in order to obtain information on their organisational selection processes.

Further Information

Documents for current award holders

New Award Holders: If you have applied in the Studentship Competition, you will receive an Acceptance Form with your offer letter. You should complete the necessary form as soon as possible so that your award can be confirmed. If you have been nominated for a BGP studentship there is no need to complete an Acceptance Form.

Continuing Award Holders: If your award is continuing into the 2009-10 academic year, you will receive an email informing you that we no longer send out letters confirming the continuation of your award into the next academic year. Instead you will be able to access the rates for the 2009-10 academic year through the relevant scheme pages on the AHRC website. If there are any issues with individual awards we will contact award holders directly. This change was notified to you in the continuation letter you received last September. The Guide for Award Holders will be available on the website in the summer and it is important that you read the revised Guide carefully as changes are made to AHRC policy each year.

Finishing students: If your award is due to end in the 2008-09 academic year you will be required to complete an End of Award Report before 30 September 2009.

Research Training Framework In 2004 the AHRC introduced a framework of research training requirements for its doctoral award holders.
