Call for Expressions of Interest

Expressions of interest are invited from researchers from all disciplines within the arts and humanities to participate in a half-day AHRC/BBC editorial seminar on the 20th Feb 2012 in London to explore ideas that will help feed into BBC TV programming for the centenary of the First World War in 2014.

The AHRC is looking for a wide range of perspectives on the First World War, both broad and innovative conceptual approaches as well as new and more specific insights and ideas. Applications from researchers with a variety of perspectives on the war, including social, political, economic, cultural and military approaches, are welcome, as are approaches exploring the role of languages, translation and interpreting. Comparative approaches are also welcome, including those that see the British experience of the War in relation to broader European, imperial or global experiences.

Research that explores the experiences of the different countries of the UK would also be welcome, as would research on specific groups or communities within British society, for example women, disabled soldiers, conscientious objectors, etc.

Also welcome are approaches that explore broader artistic and cultural responses and perspectives, including music and song, painting, literature, broadcasting, comics and other popular media.

Expressions of interest are welcome from researchers at all stages of their careers, including doctoral students and early career researchers working in the areas outlined above.

Twelve researchers covering the broad range of disciplines covered by the AHRC and the approaches indicated above will be invited to attend the workshop.

The workshop

The half–day workshop will take place on the morning of the 20th February 2012 at BBC Television Centre, London W12. It will take the form of a series of short presentations followed by a discussion of themes and ideas, facilitated by BBC staff.

While a key objective of the day would be for BBC staff to access the knowledge and skills of academics, other important objectives would be for academics to gain a greater understanding of the needs of broadcasters and some of the demands facing them and to discuss their ideas with BBC staff. The workshop will therefore provide an opportunity for genuine knowledge exchange.

There may be the opportunity for further collaboration following the workshop and these will be discussed at the workshop.

The AHRC will reimburse the cost of standard class travel to and from the event venue.
