Important Notice:
The AHRC has now announced some significant changes to its Fellowships scheme, in line with its Delivery Plan 2011-15. As a part of implementing these changes we will be making some amendments to application forms. Accordingly the last date for submitting Fellowship applications (including under the early career route) using the current JE-S forms will be 4pm on 17 October 2011. The Fellowships scheme (including the early career route) will re-open to applications in revised form in January 2012 and the amended forms will be available in JE-S from the beginning of January 2012. Individuals who have already started fellowship applications in JE-S are advised to make arrangements to complete and submit these before 17 October. In such cases it is strongly recommended that they liaise with their research offices to ensure that they allow sufficient time for institutional approval and submission processes and do not to leave submission until 17 October; it will not be possible to submit applications after this date using the current forms. Individuals who have not yet started applications and are considering applying to the scheme in 2012 are advised to read the details of the amended scheme before undertaking significant work on their application so as to ensure that it meets the expectations of the revised scheme.

Fellowships changes FAQs (pdf 84kb)
The Fellowships scheme provides salary and associated costs for periods of three to nine months, to enable an individual researcher to work on a specified research project or programme. The Fellowship can be used to support a wide range of research activities provided that these lead to significant specified research and other outputs by the end of the Fellowship, including the preparation of publications and other outputs from research conducted prior to the start of the Fellowship. Proposals for full economic costs up to a maximum of £120,000 may be submitted.
Highlight Notice
Highlight notices are intended to stimulate proposals under specified themes or initiatives in order to rapidly advance thinking in these areas. Highlight notices are being offered as opportunites within existing AHRC research schemes and are therefore assessed under the same criteria and assessment process.
A highlight notice is currently in place under the Fellowship (Standard and Early Career routes) scheme for the four themes that emerged from the Future Directions consultation:
and to the new AHRC-led cross-Council Programme on:
Please see the above important notice. The scheme closed to applications on 17 October 2011 and will be reopening in revised form to applications in early January 2012. The earliest start date for Fellowships under the revised scheme is likely to be 1 January 2013.
Please note that the assessment process for applications submitted to the Fellowships scheme (Standard and Early Career routes) takes approximately 30 weeks and the earliest start date for a project should be no earlier than 9 months after submission to the AHRC.
On occasions, there might be a delay in obtaining the peer reviews for an application and this may result in the assessment process taking longer. In such circumstances, the AHRC will contact the applicant to inform them of any delay.
For both routes of the Fellowships scheme you must submit an application through the cross-council Joint Electronic Submission - (JE-S) System. If you need any assistance to use the system, please contact the JE-S helpdesk on 01793 444164 or on JesHelp@rcuk.ac.uk.
AHRC Funding Guide (pdf 919kb) provides an overview of the different routes of the Fellowships Scheme. It details the eligibility criteria, assessment criteria, information on how to apply, eligible dates and terms and conditions of awards. You must ensure that you meet all of the eligibility criteria before submitting an application.
