Funding Opportunity

International Placement Scheme:  The Huntington Library, California, USA

Summary

Enhance your research with a placement of up to six months at one of the world's great cultural, research and educational centres.

Opportunities now exist for current AHRC-funded PhD students, research assistants and early career researchers (ECR) to undertake short-term placements at The Huntington Library during the 2012/13 academic year, as part of the AHRC International Placement Scheme (IPS).

About The Huntington Library

The Huntington Library is one of the world’s great independent research libraries, specializing in British and American history and literature, and the history of science, medicine and technology. Among the collections, which span the 11th century to the present, are 7 million manuscripts, 410,000 rare books, 270,000 general collection books, and 1.3 million photographs, prints, and ephemera. The collections are large and diverse and some remain uncatalogued, so there are genuine opportunities for fellows to find undiscovered treasures.

Applicants can consult The Huntington’s library collections.

About the AHRC International Placement Scheme

The AHRC IPS scheme runs annually, although 2012 will be the first year that The Huntington Library has participated. For the 2012/13 academic year, placements are available for eligible AHRC/ESRC* award holders in collaboration with four international institutions:

• The Library of Congress, Washington DC, USA*
• The Huntington Library, San Marino, California, USA
• National Institutes for the Humanities, Japan
• Sarai Research Programme, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, India

* ESRC award holders are eligible to apply to The Library of Congress (LoC), but not the other IPS institutions.

IPS fellowships are for three to six months (Sarai is capped at 3 months) and must take place between 1 October 2012 and 30 September 2013.

Successful applicants receive a contribution towards their flights costs, plus a monthly allowance of £1000, in addition to their normal monthly stipend/salary paid as part of their existing AHRC/ESRC* award.

For the purposes of this scheme, we are using AHRC’s current definition of ECRs as AHRC-funded researchers who are either: within eight years of the award of their PhD or equivalent professional training; or within six years of their first academic appointment.
