The AHRC periodically reviews our activities in relation to both our ongoing and developing strategic priorities and their original purposes. The outcomes of these reviews are discussed with our Advisory Board before the outcomes are considered by our Council.
The Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts (FCPA) and Research Grants Practice Led and Applied (RGPLA) schemes were originally intended for capacity-building in the area of practice-led research and both schemes operated, in one form or another, for over 10 years. After considerable discussion at our Advisory Board and Council it has been concluded that both schemes have been highly successful building capacity in the field. Therefore the decision has been made not to continue with both schemes, as it is now appropriate that funding for research in this field is through our other funding mechanisms.
The AHRC remains dedicated to this area of research, and continue to provide many opportunities for researchers in the practice-led area through our established schemes, particularly our open deadline grants and fellowships schemes, where one of the four subject panels covers research in the creative and performing arts. The early career eligibility criteria for our Fellowships scheme have also been amended to allow for universities to submit proposals for fellows who are not already on a contract with an eligible organisation (a significant criterion of the FCPA scheme).
Please note: whilst these schemes are being closed in the long-term, the AHRC is planning on running a single RGPLA round for FCPA award holders who were not able to apply for project costs at the time of application. Further details of this call will be communicated directly to relevant award holders in due course.
The scheme details below are for information only:
This scheme is now closed. If you are a current Creative and Performing Arts Fellow who was not able to apply for project costs at the time of application, a single one off call is planned. Further work is being done on the most appropriate mechanism and details will be communicated to you in due course (please ensure your JeS contact information is up to date).

For all routes of the Research Grants scheme you must submit an application through the cross-council Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) System. If you need any assistance to use the system, please contact the Je-s Helpdesk on 01793 444164 or on JeSHelp@rcuk.ac.uk.

AHRC Research Funding Guide (513kb) provides an overview of the different routes of the Research Grants Scheme. It details the eligibility criteria, assessment criteria, information on how to apply, application deadlines, eligible dates and terms and conditions of awards. You are strongly advised to read Section Seven: Additional Information for the AHRC’s definition of practice-led and applied research
Subject Coverage
You must also ensure that the project outlined in the proposal meets the AHRC's definition of research and is practice-led or applied in its approach: please refer to Section Seven: Information of the AHRC Research Funding Guide.
You should be aware that if the proposal does not articulate a clearly defined research project in this way it could be assessed as 'unsuccessful' and you would not be able to resubmit that particular project for consideration. You are therefore advised to discuss your proposal with the Research Office at your institution, and also to discuss any queries you may have with Council officers.

Notes on applying for AHRC Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts award holders
Please note that with effect from 1 July 2009, current Fellows will only be permitted to apply for projects of up to £20,000 full economic costs per proposal under this route.
If you are an AHRC Fellowship award holder, to apply for funding under the practice-led route you must identify a clearly defined project under the umbrella of your Fellowship for which you are seeking project funding. Although the funding sought is for the project costs to support your Fellowship, the practice-led proposal will be assessed on the same basis as any other proposal to the practice-led route. For this reason the Case for Support should not just reiterate the information in your original Fellowship proposal.
You will need to define the dates of the Research Grants - Practice-led and Applied Route project and outline the particular research that will be carried out in that timeframe; there will also need to be some form of output/dissemination at the end of the project (i.e. it will not be sufficient to say that the output will be at the end of the Fellowship).
If you are seeking support for historical and theoretical approaches to humanities research for less than £20,000 FEC, you should be aware that The British Academy (BA) supports a similar scheme supporting this research (http://www.britac.ac.uk).

The AHRC work with the RCUK Shared Services Centre (SSC) to deliver all of our funding activities.
