The Arts and Humanities Research Council is offering a chance for AHRC award holders to undertake some FREE media training.
We are arranging media training for AHRC-funded award holders as they frequently tell us that these are skills that they feel will benefit them. It is important for the AHRC that our award holders feel confident in communicating with the media and with the general public about their research. To this effect, we are organising two media training events – to take place as follows:
• Bristol (AHRC head office) – Weds 04 February 2009
• Sheffield Humanities Research Institute – Thursday 12 Feb 2009
Final details on location and directions will be sent out to the successful applicants.
These will be an all-day event, running from 10am - 4pm, and involve media interview practice for TV and radio, tips for tailoring messages to non-academic audiences, writing a press release and so on, and are being jointly run by an ex-BBC producer and an Financial Times journalist. Past delegates have found the training to be interesting and useful. Comments include:
‘I found the media training to be a solid platform from which to move forward’.
‘Pitched at the just the right level and has helped build my confidence’.
These media training sessions are aimed at early career award holders, perhaps people who have had limited, or no, experience in dealing with the media up to now.
The AHRC will pay for the course, but participants will have to pay their own travel to Bristol / Sheffield.
Spaces are very limited. Places will be allocated on first-come-first served basis. In the first instance please email AHRC Communications Officer, Emi Spinner (e.spinner@ahrc.ac.uk) with your full name and contact details, including email and phone number, along with a short paragraph detailing the AHRC research project you are working on. Please RSVP directly to me ASAP.
