The Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council announce the latest round of their joint scheme offering an opportunity for doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and research assistants to spend three to six months undertaking research in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
The highly prestigious Library of Congress Scholarship scheme allows successful candidates to access the internationally renowned collections at the Library of Congress during the academic year 2008/2009.
Funding will include flights and a monthly allowance in addition to the normal monthly stipend paid as part of AHRC/ESRC award holder funding.
The highlight of this award is the opportunity it allows researchers to spend an extensive amount of time in the world's largest library, surrounded by peers, knowledgeable members of academia and helpful research staff. Plus successful candidates have their own office in which to study.
The closing date for applications, open to existing AHRC and ESRC award holders, is Thursday January 31st 2008.

Editors Notes:
Arts & Humanities Research Council: Each year the AHRC provides approximately £90 million to support research and postgraduate study in the arts and humanities, from archaeology and English literature to design and dance. In any one year, the AHRC makes approximately 700 research awards and around 1,500 postgraduate awards. Awards are made after a rigorous peer review process, to ensure that only applications of the highest quality are funded. Arts and humanities researchers constitute nearly a quarter of all research-active staff in the higher education sector. The quality and range of research supported by this investment of public funds not only provides social and cultural benefits but also contributes to the economic success of the UK.
Economic and Social Research Council: The ESRC is the UK's largest funding agency for research and postgraduate training relating to social and economic issues. It supports independent, high quality research relevant to business, the public sector and voluntary organisations. The ESRC's planned total expenditure in 2007 - 08 is £181 million. At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and research policy institutes. More at www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk.
