A major archaeological research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is being showcased on the Channel 4 programme ‘Time Team’ this Monday June 1st at 9pm.
This five year collaborative research project at Stonehenge and its environs brought teams from five university archaeological departments together to work on-site.
Time Team's cameras have been with the dig through the life of the project. During their excavations the team discovered the biggest Neolithic settlement in Northern Europe, which suggests they have found the place where the people who built Stonehenge were based.
The 2008 dig was able to work within the stone circle itself and this pivotal excavation finally enables the team to reveal not only when Stonehenge was built and how it was built but, perhaps most importantly, why it was built.
