9-10 October 2009
Venues: School of World Art Studies, UEA and Norwich Castle Museum
This two day conference, co-hosted by the School of World Art Studies and the Centre for East Anglian Studies at the UEA and by Norwich Castle Museum, forms part of the Icon? Art of Faith in Norfolk project, sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The project team are investigating representative works of art and artefacts from the diverse faith groups that have both embodied and perpetuated spirituality in Norfolk. Specifically, the project focuses upon artworks that have served to bridge inter-faith differences within Norfolkâs communities and also upon eras of religious conflict, when questions of faith have become pretexts for iconoclasm and other forms of object-based violence. The team are examining the roles museums, religious and educational institutions may have played in perpetuating these attitudes.
The conference will explore one core question: What is the relationship between religious artefacts and the locality where such objects are made and used?
