Conference on Japanese Sashiko Textiles

 18 Sep 2010

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery will be hosting a one-day symposium connected to its major Japanese Sashiko Textiles exhibition on Saturday 18 September.

The show is the first-ever British exhibition of sashiko (Japanese workwear) and the Museum is running a variety of events in connection with it throughout the summer.

The one-day symposium will be an opportunity to learn more about curator and textile artist Michele Walker’s fascinating research for the exhibition, which was made possible thanks to a three-year Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Fellowship.

As well as a presentation by Michele, the day will feature talks by author Sarah E Braddock Clarke; Professor of Textile Culture and Director of the Anglo Japanese Textile Research Centre at Kent and Surrey’s University for the Creative Arts, Lesley Millar and proprietor of West Country textile business The Cloth Clinic, Janet Stoyel MBE.

Once the presentations are over, people attending will also have the exclusive opportunity of a private viewing of the exhibition.

More information can be found on the Plymouth City Council website.
