Madness and Literature - International Health Humanities Conference

 06 Aug 2010

The University of Nottingham

6th-8th August 2010

The Institute of Mental Health is hosting the 1st International Health Humanities Conference at the University of Nottingham, UK. The conference has been funded by a generous award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and is part of the Madness and Literature Network research project.

The theme of the conference, Madness and Literature, seeks to bring critical focus to the three areas of Literature, Psychiatry and Philosophy.

Keynote Speakers:
Professor Elaine Showalter (Emeritus Professor of English, Princeton University)
Professor Kay Redfield Jamison (Johns Hopkins University)

Reflecting the interdisciplinary work of the Institute of Mental Health, and the multifaceted nature of the conference’s theme, we invite the participation of colleagues from both the humanities and from clinical backgrounds who wish to participate in an exploration of the conceptions of “Madness and Literature”.  Furthermore, to be genuinely inclusive we have presentations arising from both completed projects and work that is in progress or of an exploratory nature - leading to papers by individuals from clinical, literary and philosophical backgrounds on a diverse array of subjects.
