People and Place: Landscape and Identity through time

13-14th September 2008

University of Chichester

The subject of landscape is currently at the top of scholarly debate. Researchers are increasingly acknowledging that societies throughout time were not only shaped by their landscapes but also used the world around them to inscribe, communicate and negotiate their cultural identity, be it through the construction of monuments or simply the act of naming places.

This collaborative conference brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines (in particular Archaeology, History, Geography, English and Performing Arts) to highlight new approaches to understanding past and present landscapes, and to consider the multifarious ways that cultural landscapes, both physical and psychological, have been created and perceived through time.

Importantly, the conference has been conceived as a forum to enable members of the public, early career researchers and established academics to learn from each others' work.
