A Major Research Project at Glastonbury Abbey and Symposium on 9 June 2011
The Glastonbury Abbey Excavation Archive Project (2009 -2012), funded by AHRC, is an exciting collaboration between the University of Reading’s Department of Archaeology and the Abbey Trustees. The project is analysing and will publish the archive of abbey excavations undertaken between 1904 –1979 by iconic figures in the history of medieval archaeology: Bligh Bond (1908–1921); Peers, Clapham and Fyfe (1928–1939); Ralegh Radford (1951–1964) and Wedlake (1930’s and 1978-79). There is a particular focus on Radford’s archive, deposited with the National Monuments Record at Swindon, following his death in 1999. Despite the crucial importance of Glastonbury Abbey to understanding British monasticism and significant discoveries from the excavations, published information has previously been very limited.
This one-day symposium will present the initial results in papers from specialists working on key areas of the current research project including Dr Cheryl Allum, John Allan, Dr Ron Baxter and Claire Stephens (GSB Prospection).
The cost of the Symposium is £30 (Students with card £25) to include abbey tours, coffee, tea and a buffet lunch.
