Striking Women: Voices of South Asian workers from Grunwick and Gate Gourmet: 8 October 2009 – 31 March 2010
Remember Grunwick, the 1976 strike in London led by South Asian women ‘strikers in saris,’ according to the media? Almost thirty years later, women workers at Gate Gourmet took action against their employer and the British press reached for the same clichés.
This display explores the similarities and differences between the two strikes, setting them in the context of the history of migration to the UK. This display is part of a research project funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council.
