Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking Statement for April 2015 - March 2016

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funds world-class, independent researchers in a wide range of subjects: history, archaeology, digital content, philosophy, languages, design, heritage, area studies, the creative and performing arts, and much more.

We invest public money to support research and postgraduate training in collaboration with a number of partners. The quality and range of research supported by this investment of public funds not only provides social and cultural benefits and contributes to the economic success of the UK but also to the culture and welfare of societies around the globe.

We are supported mainly by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

The AHRC is committed to the principles of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and the abolition of modern slavery and human trafficking. AHRC maintains a Code of Conduct, policies on Corporate Responsibility and Whistleblowing as part of a wider suite of policies, all of which are easily accessible by all AHRC staff and are reviewed on a cyclical basis.

Within the AHRC, our recruitment and people management processes are designed to ensure that all prospective employees are legally entitled to work in the UK and to safeguard employees from any abuse or coercion once in our employment.

The AHRC’s procurement for goods and services is provided by our shared services provider, UK SBS. Our supply chain is limited and we procure goods and services from a restricted range of UK and overseas suppliers. The UK SBS have also published their statement on Slavery & Human Trafficking which includes their mechanisms for guarding against modern slavery in their client’s supply chains. AHRC will undertake the following activities:

  • Make all staff aware of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and inform them of the appropriate action to take if they suspect a case of slavery or human trafficking
  • Ensure that consideration of the modern slavery risks and prevention are added to AHRC’s policy review process as an employer and procurer of goods and service
  • Include the Modern Slavery Act 2015 into our Whistleblowing Policy.

This statement has been approved by Chief Executive and the Senior Management Team at AHRC.
