Research Networking Highlight Notice for International Development

Return to opportunities

This highlight notice is intended to encourage the development of research networking proposals which explore the contribution that arts and humanities research can make to challenges, policy and/or practice relating to international development.

It also seeks to support the development of sustained international boundary crossing collaborations with Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) which receive Official Development Assistance (ODA) (details are in the Highlight Notice Document) and/or with organisations which play an important role in supporting international development.

This highlight notice has been updated in January 2017 to reflect two main changes. First, an extension of the deadline to 25th April 2017 (although early submission is encouraged where possible). Second, the addition of a further area of opportunity in relation to China and the Creative Economy, intended to build on the AHRC’s participation in the Pujiang Innovation forum in October 2016. However, applications will continue to be welcomed on other topics within the scope of the highlight notice in line with the updated Highlight notice document.

This initiative will be funded through the AHRC’s allocation from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). Given that international collaboration with developing countries is central to this highlight notice, applications under this highlight notice may seek up to £30,000 of supplementary funding specifically to enhance international activities, collaborations and participation (particularly in relation to LMICs) in addition to the normal £30,000 networking scheme limit.

Further details on the context and aims for, and scope of, the highlight notice, as well as further information on how to apply can be found in the Highlight Notice document (PDF, 114KB).

Applications which do not fit under this highlight notice can continue to be submitted to the Research Networking scheme as usual, using the standard Research Networking costings, eligibility criteria, and assessment process.

Highlight notices are intended to stimulate proposals addressing strategic priorities or emerging research areas in order to encourage innovation, new thinking and/or the development of collaborations in these areas. Highlight notices are offered as opportunities within existing AHRC research schemes and applications under this highlight notice will be considered through the normal peer review processes for the Research Networking scheme. Closing Dates

Closing Date: 25/04/2017

The application form for highlight applications will be available in Je-S from early to mid-December 2016.

In order to be considered under this highlight notice applications must be submitted by research organisations before 1600hrs on Tuesday 25th April 2017.

How to make an application

You should submit your proposal using the Research Councils' Joint electronic Submission (Je-S) System. The form will be available from early to mid-December 2016. To prepare a proposal form (from early to mid-December 2016) in Je-S log-in to your account and choose New Document, then select 'AHRC' as the Council, 'Standard Proposal' as the Document Type, 'Research Networking' as the Scheme, "AHRC Research Networking Scheme Highlight Notice for International Development Feb 2017" as the Call/Type/Mode and then 'Create Document'. Je-S will then create a proposal form, displaying the relevant section headings. Using the 'Help' link at the top of each section will provide guidance relevant to that section of the form.

Note that clicking 'submit document' on your proposal form in Je-S initially submits the proposal to your host organisation's administration, not to AHRC. Please remember to allow sufficient time for your organisation's submission process between submitting your proposal to them and the Call closing date.

Applications under the highlight notice are expected to meet the normal requirements for applications to AHRC's Research Networking scheme. However, additional information on fit to the highlight notice and a separate ODA compliance statement attachment should be included in applications as outlined in the Highlight Notice document.

Please ensure you read the complete Highlight Notice document before beginning your application.

Do not submit to the standard networking scheme; to be considered under this highlight notice you must submit to the call titled “AHRC Research Networking Scheme Highlight Notice for International Development Feb 2017”.
