Shortlist Announced for the AHRC Research in Film Awards

The Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC)1 received hundreds of entries for the third annual Research in Film Awards 2017. The judges – who included Richard Davidson-Houston of Channel 4 Television, Jan Dalley, Arts Editor of the Financial Times and Matthew Reisz from Times Higher Education, along with several other film industry experts and academics2 – had the demanding task of whittling down the shortlist across five categories.

Twenty-five films have now been shortlisted for this year’s awards, including animations, dramas, documentaries and community collaboration projects. The filmmakers and research leads will be invited to a special ceremony at the prestigious 195 Piccadilly in London, home of BAFTA, on 9 November, when the overall winner of each category will be announced.

Writer and broadcaster Danny Leigh, will be hosting the ceremony, where each of the five winners will receive a trophy and £2,000 prize money to put towards their future filmmaking activities.

Joanna Callaghan, from the University of Sussex, who judged the awards said: “The quality of films this year was excellent with a range of diverse topics that demonstrate the breadth of research undertaken in the humanities. Many of these show how effective film as a medium can be, to explore research questions, communicate findings and elaborate research processes in unexpected and unique ways."

The films covered some of the key themes in arts and humanities as well as the major international challenges of our time from climate change to migration and human trafficking.

All of the films are rooted in arts and humanities research and use poetry, art and drama to explore these issues.

Launched in 2015, the Research in Film Awards celebrate short films, up to 30 minutes long, that have been made about the arts and humanities and their influence on our lives.

There are five categories with four of them aimed at the research community – this includes a new category for 2017 on the theme of international development, which was well received – and one open to the public.

Jan Dalley, Chair of the Judging Panel, said: “A team of judges watched the longlisted films in each of the categories to select the shortlist and ultimately the winner. Key criteria included looking at how the filmmakers came up with creative ways of telling stories – either factual or fictional – on camera that capture the importance of arts and humanities research to all of our lives.”

The winning films will be shared on the Arts and Humanities Research Council website and YouTube channel. On 9 November you’ll be able to follow the fortunes of the shortlisted films on Twitter using the hashtag #RIFA2017.
