Design Against Crime
This film showcases Design Against Crime. One of the AHRC’s flagship projects, it is an example of researchers creating new goods and services through innovative approaches and creative partnerships. It was led by a team at London’s Central Saint Martins.
Faced with the problem of the growing numbers of cycle thefts in our cities, they worked with Transport for London, the police, the Design Council, cycle groups and local authorities to develop the ‘M stand’ which combines innovative design with a close understanding of how cycle theft occurs.
The product, which was developed with the help of AHRC funding, was bought by a number of local authorities who all reported a decline in cycle theft. Christopher Nicola, Transport Planner for the London Borough of Camden, said: “The project really helped to reduce cycle theft in the borough which was amazing for us because it was something we thought we couldn’t change.”
